Nine Naval Academy Varsity Athletic Programs Recognized for Academic Performance

May 16, 2018

Nine Naval Academy varsity athletic programs have been recognized by the NCAA for academic excellence after scoring in the top 10 percent of their sports in the most recent Academic Progress Rates.  The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams.

The nine Navy programs recognized include: football, men’s cross country, men’s gymnastics, men’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, men’s tennis, men’s track & field, women’s cross country and women’s soccer.

The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.  The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.

Navy’s nine programs honored were equal to Air Force (five) and Army (four) combined.  Football was the only team from the American Athletic Conference to be recognized, seven Patriot League teams were recognized in men’s cross country, three Patriot League teams were recognized in men’s lacrosse, four Patriot League teams were recognized in men’s soccer, five Patriot League teams were recognized in men’s tennis, four Patriot League teams were recognized in men’s track & field, nine Patriot League teams were recognized in women’s cross country and three Patriot League teams were recognized in women’s soccer.
