Jones has been instrumental in facilitating a learning environment in the athletic training department at Navy. She initiated an internship program for undergraduate athletic trainer students that exposes them to the unique environment of the Naval Academy, while allowing them to gain the practical athletic training experience required to become certified. In addition, she created post-graduate internship positions that allow recently graduated, certified athletic trainers the opportunity to work full-time in a high level Division I athletics program.
In 1986, Jones earned her master's of science degree in sport administration from the University of North Dakota. While at UND, her sport responsibilities included football and women's basketball, and she served as a clinical supervisor in a National Athletic Trainer's Association (NATA) approved undergraduate athletic training curriculum.
Jones received her bachelor's of science degree in sports sciences from the University of Michigan in 1983, attending on a field hockey scholarship. That same year, she completed the athletic training curriculum at West Chester University. Shortly after graduation, she spent a year as an athletic trainer at Sportscare Physical Therapy Services in Ann Arbor.
