The Naval Academy Athletic Association has assembled one of the best coaching staffs in America. The 2011-12 season was a banner year for Navy athletics as the Midshipmen won the Patriot League's Presidents' Cup for the first time in school history. The Cup is awarded to the member institution with the highest cumulative sports point total for its Patriot League standings in sponsored men's and women's sports. Overall, Navy sports teams won 65 percent of its contests in 2011-12, produced eight All- American, six Academic All-Americans, 18 conference championships, 13 conference athletes of the year and 11 conference coaches of the year. Navy won the overall (20-12) and Star (17-5) series over Army and has now won the overall series seven years in a row and is 15-0-1 in the Star series over the last 16 years against the Black Knights. Navy got it done in the classroom as well, ranking fourth in the country among schools with FBS football programs in graduation rates at 96 percent.
This past season, Kostacopoulos reached a milestone as he became the 37th-active NCAA head coach to reach the 700-win plateau. In 2011, Kostacopoulos guided Navy to its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance after the Mids captured both the Patriot League regular season and tournament crowns. Prior to the Naval Academy, Kostacopoulos served as the head coach at both Providence and Maine where he led each school to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths. |
Kelley has led Navy to the NCAA Championships in 12 of his 13 years which included 2004. His teams were second in the air rifle in 2004, 2008 and 2009. His squad has won the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference championship every year, winning both disciplines in 11 of the last 13 years. Fifteen different athletes have earned All-America honors under Kelley. Three of them (Lisa Kunzelman, Chris Schneider and Sarah Bergman) were named All-American all four years. In Navy rifle history, just five shooters have accomplished that. |

DeChellis led Penn State to a 27-11 record, the most wins in school history, and a NIT National Championship in Madison Square Garden following the 2009 season. For his efforts, he was named the 2009 Big Ten Coach of the Year. DeChellis led Penn State to its first NCAA Tournament since 2001 during the 2010-11 season when he guided the Nittany Lions to a 19-15 overall finish and an appearance in the Big Ten Tournament championship game. DeChellis has helped raise over 1.5 million dollars for Coaches vs. Cancer and was named the 2006 National Coaches vs. Cancer Man of the Year. In 2009-10 alone, he helped generate a record $207,050 in net funds. |
He has guided the Mids to nine individual boat titles at the Patriot League Championships, including having at least one boat win a conference title in each of the last three seasons. In 2005, he led Navy to the inaugural Patriot League team title. This past season, Navy placed three boats in the top six at the EAWRC Sprints, while in 2011, the Mids won the overall points title and the Directors Cup at the 2011 ECAC Championships. Prior to becoming the head coach of the women's team, Hughes served as the varsity lightweight coach for three years followed by another three-year stint as the assistant heavyweight coach. |

The 2011 Patriot League Coach of the Year has compiled an overall record of 71-55, a Patriot League regular season record of 34-22 and a league tournament record of 8-2 at Navy. In all, Pemper’s teams have posted a 306-103 record in her 14 seasons as a head coach. |
After a remarkable career at Division III Messiah, Brandt Ranks fifth all-time on the career winning percentage list, having won over 82 percent of his games. He is second on the active list. Brandt has been named the NSCAA National Coach of the Year four times, the second most all-time behind legendary Indiana coach Jerry Yeagley. Brandt won six NCAA Division III titles at Messiah, the second most won by a coach in NCAA history. During his last five years at Messiah, his squads won four national titles (2004, 2005, 2006, 2008). |

Last season, Cantello guided the Mids to its fourth consecutive Patriot League title and earned his fourth conference coach of the year accolade. As cross country head coach, Cantello has a career record of 241-69-1, including a 34-9-1 mark against Army. From 1981-88, Cantello held a dual coaching role, as he guided the Navy's men's indoor and outdoor track squads in addition to the cross country team. As head track coach, Cantello led the Mids to a 67-9-1 dual meet record. |
Gabarra has led Navy to three Patriot League titles and three NCAA Tournaments. With a career record of 243-122-33, Gabarra ranks among the top-25 active coaches in the nation for career victories and she has led Navy to 17 consecutive winning seasons. One of the best players in the history of women's soccer, Gabarra is a World Cup and Olympic Champion. She is also a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame and the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. |

In her 25 seasons at the helm of the Navy women’s cross country program, has a career record of 123-21. The program has also flourished academically under Boyle, last season 15 Mids were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and the team earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team accolades. Prior to becoming a Division I program in 1991, Boyle led Navy to three consecutive undefeated seasons and four straight top- five finishes at the NCAA Division II Championship. |

Navy has made 11 trips to the NCAA Championship, including six under Owen’s watch. Owen helped develop All-American and 2004 Byron Nelson Award Winner Billy Hurley. Hurley earned his tour card for the 2012 PGA Tour by finishing 25th on the 2011 Nationwide Tour money list. Owen was the recipient of the 2009 winner of the Labron Harris Sr. Award, presented by E-Z-GO in cooperation with The PGA of America and the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Harris Award is presented to the college or high school coach and PGA Professional whose support of the game through teaching, coaching and involvement in the community has helped ensure the continued growth of the game and who represents the finest qualities the game has to offer. |
The Mids defeated Army for the 23rd straight season, the most consecutive wins by any team in the century-old Army-Navy series, in 2012 to improve its mark over the last six seasons to 65-8. Three Mids advanced to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. At least one Navy swimmer has advanced to the NCAA Championship four times in the last five years, a span that includes Laura Gorinski (in 2012) becoming the first female swimmer in league history to compete in three events at a single NCAA meet. |

Last season, Fukushima led Navy to its fourth consecutive victory over Army and mentored Andrew Faulk to a 13 th-place finish in the all-around at the NCAA Championships. Fukushima has been named Coach of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC) and was once named Men's Team Coach of the Year by USA Gymnastics. Under Fukushima's guidance in 2012, Andrew Faulk was the recipient of the Thompson Trophy Cup, which is presented to that midshipman, male or female, who has done the most during the year to promote athletics at the Naval Academy. Faulk was also one of six finalists for the Nissen-Emery Award, which is presented to the nation's top senior gymnast. |
Puryear has built the Navy program from scratch, guiding the team to the Patriot League finals in each of the last two years. The 2012 team earned the top seed in the Patriot League Tournament in just the program's third year as a varsity program. Puryear was named the 2012 Wilson / ITA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year after guiding Navy to a 20-3 record which featured an 11-0 and 19-1 start. The Midshipmen were on the cusp of the national rankings following their 11-0 start. In just the program's second year, Puryear led Navy to a 22-10 record and a spot in the Patriot League finals. For his efforts, he was voted the 2011 Patriot League Coach of the Year, the 13th time in his career he has won conference Coach of the Year honors. |

As senior associate head coach since 2008, Friedrich guided the heavyweight freshman to nearly 60 wins; the Mids’ first freshman crew has placed in the top six in each of the last two seasons at the Eastern Sprints and took ninth at the 2012 IRA National Championships. Prior to leading the heavyweight freshman crews, Friedrich was the head coach of the lightweight team from 2002-08 where during his seven years as head coach, the varsity boat posted a combined 12-2 in its races for the Callow Cup (Penn) and Haines Trophy (Harvard). In 2004, he led the lightweight team to an undefeated season, capped by the program’s first IRA title in 42 years. |
Cooksey has guided 12 athletes to a total of 19 All-America honors. Cooksey has led Navy to 10 league titles and owns a 28-20 record against Army in Star Meets. Cooksey was an All-America high jumper during his undergraduate career at Indiana State. |

The Navy women's IC Sailing team placed seventh at the 2012 national championship, its highest finish in almost 10 years. Burman guided the squad to the 2011 ICSA Sloop National Championship for the first time in 15 years. During his four years at Navy, five different student-athletes have earned national recognition, including 2011 grad Robert Vann, who was named the recipient of the Robert H. Hobbs Trophy as the sport's Sportsman of the Year. |
Criste has produced two Division I All-Americans while at Navy and has led the Mids to over 300 dual-scored victories. Navy has won five Patriot League titles under Criste's guidance and she has earned five league coach-of-the-year accolades. He compiled a 47-26 (.644) record in five seasons at Stony Brook and was named the America East Coach of the Year in 2010 and ‘11 as he guided the Seawolves to back-to-back America East regular-season titles (2010- 11). In 2010, Sowell led Stony Brook to the program’s first America East regular-season title and a school- record 13 wins. Sowell was the head coach at Dartmouth from 1999-2003, taking the team from last place in the Ivy League to first. In his final season, Sowell’s squad posted an 11-3 record and won the Ivy League with a 5-1 record. It was Dartmouth’s first Ivy League title since 1965 and just the third Ivy League title in school history. Sowell served as an assistant coach for the gold-medal winning Team USA at the 2010 World Championships in England. |
Bock has posted a mark of 1,258-215 in 35 seasons as a women’s head coach. Bock arrived on The Yard after having led Juniata’s women’s team to at least 30 wins in his final 31 seasons at the school, and to 40-win seasons on 10 different occasions during this span. Additionally, Juniata advanced to each of the 30 NCAA Division III Tournaments played during Bock’s tenure, played in eight NCAA title matches and won national crowns in 2004 and ’06. |

While at Navy in 2012, Timchal became the first college lacrosse coach to win 400 career games and is the sport's all-time wins leader. Timchal won eight national championships at Maryland, including seven in a row from 1995-2001. Was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2012. |
Schofield has led Navy to 13 of its 14 NCAA appearances during his tenure.The 14 NCAA Tournament appearances are the sixth most in NCAA history. Schofield has accounted for 13 of them. Schofield has been named a seven-time CWPA Eastern Coach of the Year, including in the 2010 season. He has guided Navy to seven straight CWPA Eastern Championship finals appearances, tied for the longest streak in league history. During his tenure, Navy has had 20 different players garner 30 All-America honors. A Navy water polo athlete has won All-America accolades in 13 straight seasons. |

Last season, Perry guided the varsity four to the title at the IRA National Championships, while three years ago, the varsity eight placed second at the event. As an assistant coach at Navy from 2003-05, he led the lightweight freshman to a remarkable 33-1 record. Prior to Navy, Perry was the head coach of Dartmouth College lightweight team for four years and guided the Big Green to a 15-7 record during his tenure and was named the EARC Coach of the Year in 2007 after his first varsity boat won the Eastern Sprints Championship. |
In 2007 and ’08, Burnett led the Midshipmen an 18th-place finish at the NCAA Championship, their highest NCAA finish (18th) since placing 13th in 1990. Burnett helped develop two of Navy’s all-time winningest wrestlers – Bryce Saddoris (2008-11) with 147 wins and Matt Stolpinski (2005-08) with 141. Burnett continues to be active on a national and international level. He helped lead the United States freestyle wrestling team to six medals at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico and will serve as a member of the coaching staff at the 2012 Junior World Freestyle Championship in Thailand this September. |

Tihansky also led squad to the 2007 Kennedy and McMillan Cup, Intercollegiate Big Boat East Coast Championship. After serving as the meet director for the U.S. Offshore Sailing Championship and running a flawless event, he was named U.S. Sailing's National Sailor of the Week in October 2011. During the summer of 2007, Tihansky helped his crew to the Lightning World Championships in Athens, Greece. |
