Intercollegiate Sailing Wraps Up Fall Season

Navy competed in three regattas.

Intercollegiate Sailing Places Ninth at the Truxtun Umsted Regatta

Navy will compete in four away regattas next weekend.

As a Junior: Gary competed in 20 events as a doublehanded skipper and as a laser sailor for Navy this year ... Prieto placed ninth in the 18-member field of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Laser Performance Men's Singlehanded National Championship ... he also competed in the ICSA Team Racing National Championship as well as the ICSA Coed Fleet Racing National Championship, where Navy finished fifth and 11th, respectively ... his best finished included victories at the Admiral Moore Team Race, the Prosser Trophy Team Race, MAISA’s team race conference championship, and Navy Spring.

As a Sophomore: Gary competed in 17 regattas in his second year representing the Naval Academy, including three ICSA National Championships ... some of his results were a second place at the St. Mary's Team Race, and a victory at the Team Race Challenge ... Gary was also selected to represent the USNA at the Indian Admiral's Cup Regatta, an international competition between foreign service academies ... Gary helped win this event for Navy.

As a Freshman: Gary sailed in 13 events his freshman year as a skipper ... he had six top-five finishes this season ... he finished third at the John Jackson team race, second at Central Fall and second at the Jesuit Open leading to an overall team win ... he also was first in B division at the Charleston Spring Open.

Prior to Navy: Grew up in Southhold, N.Y. ... graduated from Southhold High School in 2014 ... grew up sailing Lasers out of Old Cover Yacht Club in Peconic Bay ... sailed nationally and internationally in Lasers ... also played tennis in high school ... son of Richard and Julia Prieto ... brother to James and George ... James graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2011 and George graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2013.
