As a Sophomore: Michael competed in 18 events, including two national championships, during his second year at Navy as a coed skipper in fleet racing and team racing events. Some of his top finishes include a 2nd place finish at the War Memorial, a 3rd place finish at the Graham Hall Team Race, and a 3rd place finish at the Prosser Trophy.
As a Freshman: Michael competed in 14 events, including a national championship, during his first year at Navy as both a coed skipper and a heavy crew. Some of his top finishes include a 1st place finish at the Riley Cup, a 1st place finish at the Hobart William Smith Intersectional, and a 3rd place finish at the College of Charleston Open.
Prior to Navy: Graduated from Jesuit High School in Tampa, Fla. in 2011. Attended the Marian Military Institute before coming to the Naval Academy. Competed on the sailing team at Jesuit and at the Davis Island Yacht Club. Also wrested at Jesuit and helped his team to district and regional titles in 2010. Son of Charles and Valerie Popp. Grandfather, Jerry Popp, is a 1962 graduate of the Naval Academy. Majoring in Oceanography.
