As a Freshman: Nicholas competed in 10 regattas as both a skipper, crew, and a member of the match race team ... his best results included a victory in the Intrepid Trophy with the match race team and a third-place finish at the Hanbury Trophy Team Race.

Prior to Navy: Graduated from Antilles school in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I in 2015 ... he sailed on the multi-national championship varsity team during all four years of his high school career and served as the captain of the sailing team his senior year ... attended Portsmouth Abbey for a postgraduate year as part of the Naval Academy Foundation Program ... during his time at Portsmouth, Abbey, he participated in varsity cross country, varsity swimming, and varsity sailing, while also being a Dean's List scholar the entire year ... son of Karl and Tammy Gartner.
