LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Taking a break from the cold, four members of the Navy Intercollegiate Sailing team traveled to sunny Southern California this past weekend for the Rose Bowl Regatta, hosted by the University of Southern California.
This event drew 29 colleges from 11 states and the District of Columbia and was run concurrently with a 60-team high school regatta. The Midshipmen were thrilled to have sunny skies and temperatures in the sixties and seventies throughout the weekend, but light winds and the large number of boats made for challenging racing. The sailors and staff decided that consistency would be the top priority for the regatta and the team did a great job of remaining near the top of the fleet throughout Saturday's racing and through the beginning of the day on Sunday. The Mids were able to open up a healthy overall lead on the field heading into the last set of races, despite not winning any of the races. Jason Carminati and Alice Hong finally won the next-to-last race of the event to win the A Division while Michael Grove and Caroline Lockett sealed the overall win for the team in the last B Division race.
