ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy intercollegiate sailing team recorded another strong finish at an interconference team racing regatta this weekend, coming in second at the 10-team Admiral Moore Team Race at N.Y. Maritime College.
Navy overcame a slow start and charged throughout the weekend, but the 14-7 overall record was not quite enough to pass the host Privateers. Solid, steady winds made for some great racing in the currents of the East River. Sailing for Navy were skippers Lukas Edegran, Taylor Vann and Alex Ramos with crews Saverio Maldari, Alex Asuncion and Julie Miller.
The other team race of the weekend was the extremely competitive Aaron Szambecki Memorial Team Race at Old Dominion University. Light winds and thunderstorms prevented many races from happening on the first day, but the fleet got some good racing conditions on Sunday, despite periods of rain. Navy ended up 7th overall in the eight-team event. Jason Carminati, Devin Laviano and Michael Grove skippered with Caroline Lockett, Julie Digiovanni and Chelsea Smith as crews.
The third event of the weekend was the Owen Trophy at Yale University. Navy finished seventh overall in this 15-team regatta. Mary Hall, Marissa Lihan and Layne Morrison finished 10th in A Division while George Prieto, Layne Morrison and Sarah Blake were fifth in B.
