ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team qualified for the ISCA Team Race Nationals this past weekend with their performance at the MAISA Team Race Championship for the Captain Joe Prosser Trophy, which was contested in Annapolis.
The Prosser Trophy is always one of the most important and high stress regattas of the year, as four berths are awarded for the ICSA / APS Team Race National Championship.
Navy performed well as a host, completing the three full round robin event and staging quality racing throughout the weekend. The Midshipmen also delivered on the course, finishing third overall and punching the ticket to Nationals for the second year in a row.
Under sunny skies and temperatures in the 50s and 60s throughout the event, the team saw a wide range of wind conditions and the depth of the team was on display as conditional substitutions always resulted in continued strong performances.
Michael Grove, Mary Hall, Michael Popp and Patrick Snow served as skippers with Layne Morrison, Chelsea Smith, Alex Asuncion Connor Hendi, Charlie Peck and Aaron Hull crewed. This year's Nationals will be at St. Mary's College of Maryland May 31 - June 2.
The team's lone away contest of the weekend was the Emily Wick Trophy at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. In a tight fleet, Navy finished eighth overall out of 18 teams. Marissa Lihan, Megan Hough and Emma Ferris finished ninth in A division, while Killian Corbishley and Karen Vargas were 8th in B.
