Intercollegiate Sailing Wins Two Regattas
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team won a pair of regattas over the weekend, including its first conference championship regatta of the year, the MAISA Team Race Championship for the Captain "Joe" Prosser Trophy.
The top eight teams in the Mid-Atlantic Conference traveled to SUNY Maritime College in New York for the Prosser Trophy. The first day was cold and windy with strong currents in the East River. The racing was very challenging and tight and no race was a sure thing.
Navy entered the event ranked fifth in the country in the national team rankings and had been sailing well in recent regattas. That trend continued at the Prosser and Navy finished the first day in second place, just one win out of first. Sunday was very different, with warm weather and very light wind. The wind was so light and inconsistent that we weren't able to complete many races. The Midshipmen did, however, sail just enough races to pull into first overall and claim the 2017 MAISA Team Racing Championship.
Also, by finishing in the top four, Navy will advance to compete in the Team Racing National Championship in Charleston, S.C. from May 27-29.
Navy picked up another win in its only other competition of the weekend, the Jeremy Pinkerton Memorial Regatta, hosted by the University of Maryland. Navy won 12 races in the 10-team regatta, winning both A and B Divisions. Hamrick Morgan and Manuel Inserni-Pagan sailed in A while Spencer Nora and Karma Richards sailed B.
