Navy Finishes Fourth at the Prosser Trophy

Navy IC Sailing placed fourth at the Prosser Trophy.

April 11, 2012

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- Even though it still seems early, the Navy intercollegiate sailing team already hit the home stretch of its spring season and the conference championships have begun.

The first one of the season was the MAISA Team Racing Championship for the Captain Joe Prosser Trophy, hosted this past weekend at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Only eight teams qualify for this event and the competition is always fierce for the three berths at Team Racing Nationals that are awarded here. It was a bright and sunny weekend in Southern Maryland with shifty, 8-15 knot winds and flat water, nearly perfect team racing conditions. Navy gave a good fight throughout the weekend, but in the end came up just short of advancing, finishing fourth overall. Skippers Jason Carminati, Devin Laviano and Michael Grove with crews Caroline Lockett, Saverio Maldari, Julie Digiovanni, Chelsea Smith and Glenn McKenna competed in the event.

Some of the team's up-and-coming team racers tested their skills this past weekend at the Lynn Marchiando Team Race at MIT. This event draws the top New England teams and is a great chance to get a top-level event in for the team's younger sailors. The first day served as a qualifier for the Friis Trophy at Tufts on Sunday, and the competition was very tight. In the end, Navy fell just short of the cut by virtue of a tiebreak and returned on Sunday to sail the second day of the Marchiando. Sunday was a little different, however as the event was the first tie the team has competed in the new firefly dinghies that were just delivered to MIT this spring. Since we hadn't seen these boats before, it was a great help to have Prof. Gina Henderson and her husband Joe accompanying the team on this trip. Prof. Henderson raced fireflies avidly in her native Ireland and even competed for the Irish National Team Racing Team, so her knowledge and experience proved very valuable. The team was able to come through with a third-place finish, again losing a tough tiebreaker. Navy's team consisted of Taylor Vann, Jocelynn Knudsen, Charlie Peck, Mary Hall, Markus Edegran, Julie Miller and Alex Ramos.
