ANNAPOLIS, Md. - On a beautiful spring weekend, the Navy intercollegiate team served as the host of the first major co-ed fleet racing regatta of the year, the Truxtun Umsted Regatta.
Due to a shift in the college sailing calendar, this event was almost a full month later than usual and the weather cooperated for the fleet. Navy finished third overall in the strong 14-team field and saw solid performances from all four divisions. Michael Grove, Alex Asuncion, Emma Ferris and Michael Popp finished fourth in A division. Navy claimed the B division victory for the second year in a row with Mary Hall, Layne Morrison and Connor Hendi. Phil Youngberg also found the podium, finishing third in C, while Marissa Lihan was sixth in D.
Also in action this weekend, a small team took a trip north with LT John Doherty to compete in the Old Guard Regatta for the Owen, Mosbacher and Knapp Trophies, hosted this year by Yale University. Navy finished 11th overall in the 17 team event, with Patrick Snow and Chelsea Smith finishing fifth in A division while Charlie Peck and Karen Vargas were 13th in B.
Closer to home, LCDR Ian McGuinness took a team to the Robert Arrigan Memorial Regatta at Georgetown University. This event boasted nine teams sailing in combined divisions. Navy finished fourth overall with Michael Madigan and Molly Robertson finishing 6th and Hannah Hughes and Aaron Hull coming in 14th.
