Navy Finishes Eighth at the Coed Nationals
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team closed its spring season by placing eighth at the ICSA Gill Coed Nationals Championship on the Cooper River in Charleston.
The College of Charleston won the coed championship with 230 points and was followed by Yale (249) and Dartmouth (261) in the top three. Navy had 314 points.
The top-18 teams from the semifinal round battled for two days on the Cooper River. both days of racing, no wind in the morning led to long afternoons of sailing after the sea breeze finally filled in. Winds were from the south at 5-10 knots both days and the current played a major role at times.
The racing was extremely close and no teams were immune from finishes at the bottom. Navy showed the speed that had allowed them to sail well all year and win the semifinals, but struggles on the starting line and around the marks led to inconsistent scores.
"Even though the team was hoping for a better finish, they should be very proud of everything they accomplished this year," said head coach Ian Burman. "With some great returning talent and a strong incoming class, we expect to be back to challenge again next year."
Navy also placed fifth in the Team Racing Nationals and was 18th in the Women's Sailing Nationals over the past week-and-a-half in Charleston.
