NORFOLK, Va. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team closed out the 2017-18 season by placing 10th at the Gill College Sailing Coed National Championship this past week in Norfolk, Virginia.

The coed national championship began with two 18-team semifinal rounds earlier in the week. The entire semifinal round was sailed in a light to moderate NE breeze. Navy got off to a strong start and, despite numerous delays for lack of wind, was comfortably in position to advance throughout the event. Gary Prieto, Parker Loftus, Ana Mier and Sarah Barkley secured a third place finish in A division while Peter Hogan, Max Brill, Kelly Milliken and Emma Remis were sixth in B. The team wound up fourth overall and felt good headed into the finals.

For the final round, the wind shifted around to the South and stayed light. The breeze was at least consistent for the first day of competition and the organizers were able to complete 12 races per division.

A small storm cell at the end of the day brought some stronger winds and the teams were able to hike for a few races. Navy got off to a rough start in A division, but figured out the conditions as the day progressed and improved. In B, Navy started strong but faded a bit late in the first day. The team stood ninth overall after day one, but scores were close and the team was motivated to improve its standing.

Unfortunately, conditions on the final day did not allow for much fair racing. The wind would fill in from one direction, only to die and then fill in from another direction later on. In all, only two more races were completed per division. Navy wound up 10th overall. Prieto and Mier finished 12th in A division while Hogan and Milliken were eight in B.

MIT won the coed national championship and was followed by the College of Charleston and Georgetown in the top three.

At the conclusion of the event, the ICSA All-American teams were announced for performance over the year. Navy was proud to have three sailors honored. Hogan and Prieto were named Honorable Mention All-American Coed Skippers and Mier was named Honorable Mention All-American Crew.
