The Navy intercollegiate sailing team had a busy weekend where it fielded four teams in three different team-racing events. Every member of the team saw action and despite being spread thin, it produced solid results on all fronts.
The highest finish of the weekend came at the Tom Noble Team Race at Washington College. Navy's team of Connor Timmins, Charlie Peck, Phil Youngberg, Julia McKenna, Karen Vargas and Samantha Rosales finished strong in Sunday's heavy winds to move into second overall out of six teams for the regatta.
Many of the top teams in college sailing were in Charleston, S.C., this past weekend for the Bob Bavier Team Race. Light winds prevented many races from happening on Saturday, but the conditions improved enough to finish a single round robin and final four on Sunday. Navy's team of Taylor Vann, Devin Laviano, Michael Grove, Jocelynn Knudsen, Layne Morrison, Alex Asuncion and Glenn McKenna sailed strong throughout the regatta and ended up in a tie for fourth after the round robin. Unfortunately however, Navy lost the tie breaker and ended up fifth behind the top four ranked teams in the country. The Midshipmen will have to wait until next weekend's Graham Hall Team Race at home to get another shot to topple the top ranked teams.
At home, Navy fielded two teams in the Quad Team Race scrimmage with teams from Old Dominion, Georgetown and St. Mary's. While no official scores were recorded, Navy's Orange Team of Marissa Lihan, Killian Corbishley, Mary Hall, Aly Eng, Megan Hough, Aaron Hull, Connor Hendi and Julie Miller were one of the top teams in Saturday's lighter winds while Navy's Black Team of George Prieto, Emma Ferris, Michael Popp, Chelsea Smith, Sarah Blake, Julie Miller, Aaron Hull and Megan Hough were very strong in Sunday's windier conditions. In the fleet racing portion of the scrimmage, Mary Hall and Megan Hough won the weekend.
