BRONX, N.Y. -- The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in three challenging inter-conference regattas this past weekend.
At the Admiral Moore Team Race in the Bronx, Navy started strong and finished strong to score a tie for second place overall out of ten teams. Unfortunately, the Mids lost the tiebreaker, but the mostly young squad displayed solid sailing over a wide array of challenging conditions. George Prieto, Chelsea Smith, Glenn McKenna, Mary Hall, Charlie Peck, Sarah Blake and Michael Popp comprised the team.
At the Aaron Szambecki Team Race in Norfolk, a group of eight of the best teams in the country gathered in a tune-up for the conference championships. Despite sailing well, Navy struggled to close out wins and ended up a disappointing seventh overall. The team consisted of Taylor Vann, Devin Laviano, Jocelynn Knudsen, Michel Grove, Layne Morrison and Alex Asuncion.
This year, Navy hosted the Owen Trophy Regatta as well, with a field comprised of the founding schools of college sailing and their traditional rivals. Navy finished 11th overall out of 19 teams, with Phil Youngberg, Connor Timmins, Julia McKenna, Megan Hough and Julie Miller finishing 11th in A division, while Killian Corbishley, Aly Eng, Aaron Hull, Connor Hendi and Karen Vargas were 11th in B. Marissa Lihan and Emma Ferris ran the race committee all weekend, while Samantha Rosales subbed in for an injured sailor on the Dartmouth team.
