Navy IC Sailing Qualifies for Women's Nationals
April 24, 2013
NORFOLK, Va. -- The Navy intercollegiate sailing team closed out its regular season this weekend by competing in four different events up and down the east coast.
The most notable regatta was the final conference championship of the year, the MAISA Women's Championship at Hampton University. The 12-team field coped with challenging, shifty winds throughout the event. Navy sailed well throughout to finish second and qualify directly for the College Sailing Women's National Championship Finals. Marissa Lihan, Alex Asuncion and Julie Miller finished second in the B division while Mary Hall, Layne Morrison and Killian Corbishley won the A division.
At the Admirals Cup in Kings Point, N.Y., the fleet was very busy completing the 45-race, 15-team regatta in one day. Navy finished fifth overall, as Taylor Vann, Megan Hough and Glenn McKenna finished 12th in A, Devin Laviano, Sarah Blake and Glenn McKenna were third in B and George Prieto finished third in C.
Dr. Jessica Mohler accompanied the team to New London, Conn., for the Thompson Trophy to do battle with 17 of the best teams from around the country. Navy finished sixth overall, with Michael Grove and Jocelynn Knudsen scoring sixth in A division while Michael Popp, Chelsea Smith and Connor Hendi finished fourth in B.
Closer to home, Navy finished second overall in the nine-team Arrigan Regatta at Georgetown University. In this event, both divisions raced together with Phil Youngberg and Aaron Hull finishing just ahead of Charlie Peck and KAren Vargas in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Nationals will begin next weekend with the Coed National Semifinals in Hampton, Va.
