Navy Intercollegiate Sailing Earns Six ICSA All-America Honors

Mary Hall

June 12, 2014

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - In an online awards show on Wednesday evening, the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) announced the 2014 All-American Team and the Navy intercollegiate sailing team earned six All-America certificates.

A committee of coaches who represent the seven conferences in the ICSA selects the ICSA All-American Team. To select an All-American skipper, the committee evaluates a competitor based on their competitive record in inter-conference competition as well as conference and national championships. The committee analyzes how this record compares to fellow competitors, the quality of the competition the record was achieved in, the span of the record over the fall and spring seasons, results achieved with different crews, and how the record compares to previous All-American winners in past years.

For All-American crew selections, the committee uses criteria similar to skipper selection, but also considers: demonstrated leadership (may consider seniority), outstanding body mechanics and boat handling skills as well as proven ability to improve the results of the skipper(s) with whom he or she sails.

Navy junior Mary Hall was one of only five sailors to be named to the ICSA Women's Skipper All-America Team. Hall was also named to the ICSA Coed All-America Honorable Mention list with senior Michael Grove.

Junior Alex Asuncion and senior Elizabeth Morrison were named to the ICSA Crew All-America list.

Senior Marissa Lihan was named to the ICSA Honorable Mention Women's All-America list.

"We had a deep team that was consistently strong across all disciplines this year, producing the most end of year honors we have had at Navy in a long time," said head coach Ian Burman. "We are extremely proud of the individuals honored and the entire team for delivering the results throughout the year."

Hall earns Women's Skipper All-America honors for the second straight year and she how has four certificates.

Navy's six All-America certificates were the most since earning seven in 1997.
