Navy IC Sailing Finishes Third at War Memorial Regatta

Nov. 1, 2012

KINGS POINT, N.Y. -- The War Memorial Regatta serves as the MAISA Fall Dinghy Championships and plays a major role in determining the strength of teams' schedules for the coming year.

This year's War was hosted by the US Merchant Marine Academy and the top 18 teams in the conference were on hand to fight it out on the waters of Long Island Sound. The event started out with a light easterly that was very puffy and shifty. Navy struggled early with the challenging conditions before settling down a bit in the afternoon as the wind became a bit steadier. With Tropical Storm Sandy approaching, the wind increased to 15-25 knots on Sunday. The Midshipmen benefited from being the strongest sailors on the water and made a rapid climb up the standings, placing third overall by the end of the event. Markus Edegran, Alex Ramos, Glenn McKenna and Lukas Edegran finished sixth in A division while Michael Grove, Jocelynn Knudsen and Glenn McKenna were third in B. The team's strong finish qualifies it for the Atlantic Coast Championship in two weeks at KP, the 2013 America Trophy, the 2013 Prosser Trophy, the 2013 Arrigan Memorial and the 2013 Top 9 regatta. We also secured the third place ranking for the 2013 schedule draft which will take place next month.

Just on the other side of the Throggs Neck Bridge, another group of Midshipmen competed in the Top 9 Regatta at NY Maritime College. Experiencing similar conditions as the War, this event was unusual as both divisions sailed together in one 18-boat fleet. In a close finish, Navy finished second overall, with Michael Popp and Chelsea finishing first in A with the low score for the event. Phil Youngberg and Megan Hough finished fourth in B division.

Further up the coast, a group of women from our team competed in the New England Fall Womens Championship. Connecticut College hosted the regatta this year and most of the country's top women's teams were in attendance. Navy finished seventh overall out of 18 teams. Mary Hall, Layne Morison and Erica Leinmiller were 6th in A division while Marissa Lihan, Alex Asuncion and Emma Ferris finished 7th in B.
