March 10, 2014
LOS ANGELES - The Navy varsity offshore sailing team sent seven Mids to compete in the Los Angeles Harbor Cup this past Friday through Sunday. Ten teams were on hand for the event that featured 10 races for the series.
Navy, led by team captain Andrew Beeler, got off to a strong start on Friday posting scores of 3,2,2 to end the day one point out of first place. The team started strong Saturday but stumbled in a couple of races to finish the day in third position with two races remaining on the schedule for Sunday.
After a long wait for wind Sunday morning, the seabreeze finally filled in and the final two races were run. Beeler and crew were not able to make up any ground on the leaders and ended up third for the regatta behind winner Cal Maritime and second place USC.
The Navy Harbor Cup crew included XO Roscoe Thomas on the bow, Neil McMillan on helm, Alexa Ciarolla and Nick Woods trimming jib and spinnaker, Charlie Morris trimming the main and Kya McAlister in the pit.
Next up for the varsity offshore sailing team is the Naval Academy Sailing Squadron (NASS) Spring Race from April 12-13.
