FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The 2006 Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race is an annual 160-mile coastal race that draws many of the nation's top amateur offshore sailors. The fleet begins in Ft. Lauderdale and then races down the coast of Florida finishing in Key West.

Competing in a fleet of nearly 50 boats, Allegiance, Navy's J-105, won first in its class. The Midshipmen met their boats in Key West and transferred the boats up to Ft. Lauderdale before joining the race fleet and returning to Key West. Allegiance was skippered by Ryan Field with Monica Mondloch, Jamie Moreno, James Foss, Evan Scott and James Lawsing aboard. The Mids put on an impressive showing against the nation's top amateur sailors winning their division of seven boats and earning fourth overall.

Navy's newly donated FARR 40 Conspiracy, sailed her maiden USNA voyage to compete in the race as well. As their first experience on a FARR 40, the Midshipmen quickly adapted to the new platform and earned an outstanding fourth-place finish in class and 18th out of nearly 50 boats. She was skippered by Jameson Adler with Reid Smythe, Ryan Kimmel, Wes Urquhart, Tim Burchett, J Whorley, Mark McClure, Chris Morales, Rebecca Islin and Jesse Simmermon aboard.
