Aug. 3, 2007

The Navy varsity offshore sailing team participated in the 2007 Around Long Island Race off New York this past weekend aboard the newly acquired 66-footer Zaraffa, taking second place in its class and winning the trophy for top performance by a Service Academy entry, beating out crews from the US Merchant Marine Academy and the US Coast Guard Academy.

The 15-Mid Zaraffa crew was led by skipper and team captain Matt Recker.

Next up for the team is competition in the Maryland Governor's Cup Race from Annapolis to St. Mary's tonight, also aboard Zaraffa.
