Navy Assistant Coach Earns Spot on U.S. Olympic Sailing Team
Feb. 24, 2004 Annapolis, Md. - Last weekend, Navy offshore sailing assistant coach Nancy Haberland and her team secured a spot on the Olympic team with an impressive performance at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Haberland, Carol Cronin (Jamestown, R.I.) and Liz Filter (Stevensville, Md.) are now members of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Sailing Team, which will compete in August at the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens, Greece. In the opening race on Sunday for the Yngling fleet, Cronin, Filter and Haberland crossed the finish line first with just four boat-lengths to spare, securing their place on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team. The winning finish made them mathematically unbeatable, and they elected to sit out race 16 as the remaining five teams fought through the last race to determine the final standings for the fleet. Counting seven points for the DNS (did not start) in the last race, which was discarded along with their worst placing in the series, a fifth-place finish in race four, Cronin, Filter and Haberland won with a low score of 31 points. Cronin and Filter have been teammates in the Yngling for three and a half years, adding Haberland to the mix only a few months ago. To win the series, held from Key Biscayne Yacht Club, they had to beat two teams that had won the 2003 Yngling World Championship.
