Navy Finishes In Second Place at the Kennedy Cup

April 19, 2004

Annapolis, Md. - After three days of close racing, the Navy offshore sailing team finished in second place at the Kennedy Cup this weekend. The Mids finished in a tie with Rhode Island, but the Rams posted five-straight first-place finishes to earn the tie breaker for the top spot. Cal Maritime took third place, finishing just one point behind URI and Navy.

Navy's squad, led by team captain Chad Ingle (Burlington, N.C./Southern Alamance) as skipper, finished outside the top-four only once in nine races this weekend. The Midshipman crew also included junior John Creegan (Orlando, Fla./Lake Howell Academy) as tactician, senior Todd Chambers (Rochester, N.Y./Webster) as main trimmer, senior Chris Carson (Mandeville, La./Mandeville) and junior John Coombs (Truckee, Calif./Truckee) as trimmers, senior Spencer Seufert (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) at mast, senior Matt Eck (Helena, Ga./Pelham) at pit, and senior Matt White (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) at bow.

Navy was in the top of the pack all weekend, holding second place on Friday after three races. SUNY Maritime finished the first day in first place, but the Mids were only behind by two points. On Saturday, Navy finished in first place, leading Cal Maritime by one and Rhode Island by six. The Rams posted three first-place finishes in the four races on Saturday to put themselves back in contention. On Sunday, two races were held and the top three places were still up for grabs on the final lap of the final race, but with a pair of first-place finishes, Rhode Island edged Navy on the tie-breaker to claim the title.

Navy will compete on Saturday in the NASS Spring Race, which will be held in Annapolis.
