Navy VOST Team Claims Chesapeake Hospice Cup XXIV
Sept. 13, 2005 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior captain Greg Storer (Branford, Conn.), skippering the Farr 49, Javelin defeated Jim Muldoon's SC 72 Donnybrook by a mere 11 seconds to claim top honors in class A0 during the 24th running of the Annapolis Hospice Cup. Ninety-four boats were entered in the regatta but many had difficulty completing the course in the light southeasterly breeze and the course was shortened to two legs for all who did finish. Navy entered a total of four boats in the event. In addition to Storer's crew, Navy was represented by Chris Canales (Willis, Texas) skippered another Farr 49, Hellcat, Greg Nannig (North Kingston, N.C.) skippered the Farr 46, Columbia and Joe Campbell (Medina, Ohio) led the J/105, Allegiance. Despite the light wind conditions, racing among the A0 class was extremely tight. Canales' Hellcat team ended up third just 43 seconds out of first and Nannig's Columbia team was also within striking distance the entire race. Storer also won the award for top Midshipman skipper for the event. Next up for the Varsity Offshore Sailing Team is the Naval Academy Sailing Squadron's 51st Annual Race to Oxford on Saturday, Sept. 17, and the return Hammond Memorial Race on Sunday, Sept. 18. The VOST team will have five boats on the line. For more information, please contact VOST Director, Jahn Tihansky at Tihansky@usna.edu or 410-293-5608. # GO NAVY #
