Navy Places Third at the U.S. Offshore Championship
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy varsity offshore sailing team hosted the U.S. Offshore Championship for the Lloyd Phoenix Trophy, a U.S. Sailing Association amateur big boat national championship, this past Friday-Sunday on the Chesapeake Bay.
Representing Navy was senior Ted Papenthien with crew senior Matthew Hundt, senior Patrick Francis, senior Austin Rhodes, senior Christopher Cantillo, junior Matthew Signorelli, sophomore Zackary Bauer and sophomore Charles Dimer. Papenthein and crew finished third overall in the six-race series losing second place on a tiebreaker.
“Our team fought valiantly throughout the series, winning two of the six races but struggled to maintain consistency in the challenging light wind conditions,” said Navy head coach Jahn Tihansky.
The winning skipper was Brian Kennalley out of the Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club.
Ten civilian teams representing their respective U.S. Sailing Association geographical areas competed for the biennially awarded trophy including from Pacific Palisades, Calif., Tacoma, Wash., Chicago, Ill., Houston, Texas, Cleveland, Ohio, New Haven, Conn., Solomons Island, Md., Raleigh, N.C. and Fairfax, Va.
Next up for the offshore sailing team is the Storm Trysail Club Invitational in Larchmont, N.Y. and the Annapolis Yacht Club Fall Series from October 7-8.
