Offshore Sailing Places Third at Kennedy Cup
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy offshore sailing team placed third out of 10 teams at the Kennedy Cup this weekend on the Chesapeake Bay. The Kennedy Cup, named for President Kennedy, is for the National Collegiate Large Yacht Championship.
South Florida won the Kennedy Cup with the low score of 14 points. Mass Maritime was second with 19 points and Navy was third with 23. Cal Maritime finished right behind Navy with 24 points and the College of Charleston rounded out the top-five with 26 points.
South Florida won the Kennedy Cup for the second straight season.
After digging themselves a pretty deep hole in the four races held on Saturday, Navy posted a fourth place in Sunday's only race, which was good enough to move them up into third overall and onto the podium. hey did not make it easy on themselves by being over early at the start but they didn't give up and came storming back to get into contention.
Navy won the opening race of the regatta on Saturday, and then was seventh, third and eighth in the other three races that were contested on day one.
The Kennedy Cup concludes Navy’s fall season. Navy’s next event is the Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta in Charleston in February.
