Navy Offshore Sailing Team Finishes Sixth in Kennedy Cup
Nov. 8, 2006 Navy's Offshore Sailing Team finally found their stride and won the final heat of the 2006 Kennedy Cup moving up two slots in the final standings to sixth overall. University of Rhode Island won the regatta with California Maritime finishing second and St. Mary's College finishing third. Navy took themselves out of the running with a poor first day showing. They were well in front on the first race on Saturday but excessively shifting winds compelled the Race Comittee to abandon that race and dashed any hope of a Navy comeback. Sunday's win allowed them to salvage their pride and finish the event on an upbeat note. A huge thanks from Navy Sailing to PRO Taran Teague and her RC personnel, Chief Judge Mark Murphy and his jury and Jan Richardson, Navy's behind the scene volunteer who pulled it all together. Navy Offshore sailing also represented the United States against 12 other International teams in the 2006 Student Yachting World Cup in Lorient, France. The 12-race series was held over six days aboard Mumm 30s. Navy finished fifth overall. Navy's crew was led by skipper Cullen Shaughnessy and included Monica Mondloch, Tim Burchett, Matt Recker, Sara Horn, Andy Christopher and Taylor Latham. # GO NAVY #
