ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Kennedy Cup turned out to be a real nail biter and was not decided until the very end of the seventh and final race this past weekend in Annapolis.
Led by skipper Team Captain 1/C Andy Beeler, Navy got off to a strong start winning the first race of the day and put some points between Navy and Cal Maritime and U Michigan. Navy's team fought hard all the way around the five-leg final course and although not first, were in reasonable position to hold on until the last quarter mile.
Two huge shifts came through along with big swings in velocity and Navy was on the short end of the stick for it all and dropped to eighth for the race. This created a three way tie for first with Navy losing the tiebreak to Cal.
So in the end, Cal Maritime was first, Navy second and University of Michigan was third.
The Kennedy Cup wraps up Navy's fall season and the program will return to competition in the Harbor Cup in Los Angeles, Calif. next March.
