PHILADELPHIA - The Navy rifle team fired a team score of 4610 on Friday as it defeated University of the Sciences in the first of two meetings between the schools this weekend in Philadelphia, Pa. The Devils' women's team posted a combined score of 3854 and its mixed team a score of 2168. Navy shot a 2286 in smallbore and a 2324 in air rifle.

"Our team score was fair, but we should have a better performance tomorrow," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We have to step up in air rifle. Overall, we got off to a pretty good start today, but we should do better tomorrow."

While junior Steven Frazier posted Navy's top score of 575 in smallbore, it was Alex Berry that had a career night. Her score of 573 in the discipline was a personal best for the sophomore.

"Alex made a big impact tonight and she's making a lot of progress this season, which is great to see," said Kelley.

Senior Ryan Williams (570) and freshman Jodi Cull-Host (568) were Navy's other scorers in the event.

In air rifle, Williams led all shooters with a 587 - just two points shy of his season-high total in the event. Cull-Host posted a 582, with Frazier and freshman Zach Gibson following with scores of 578 and 577, respectively.

The two schools will meet again tomorrow at 8 a.m.
