No. 15 Navy Rifle Opens Second Half Schedule with Season-High 4655 Score
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A two-month break in competition didn’t appear to affect the No. 15 Navy (2-3, 1-3 GARC) rifle team on Friday as the team posted a season-best score of 4,655 points versus No. 8 Nebraska (3-4, 2-3 GARC) in a home match at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range. Unfortunately, in terms of the final outcome, the Mids’ season-high score was countered by a season-high from the visiting Huskers, who earned a 27-point victory with the final score being 4,682-4,655.
Kestrel Kuhne (So., Everett, Pa.) was the top individual scorer for the entire match with a career-best 1,178-point aggregate that surpassed Nebraska’s Hannah Virga’s 1,175 for top billing on Friday. Kuhne’s career day came courtesy of a pair of personal-bests with a 586 in smallbore and 592 in air rifle. The sophomore’s previous high scores were a 577 in smallbore and 591 in air rifle.
“We had a great performance today with a season-high score,” remarked head coach Mike Anti. “Our team continues on an upward trend with the potential to really shoot some great team scores. I was really impressed with a number of performances from our athletes especially Kestrel Kuhne. She led the team and was the individual match champion with an 1178 aggregate score, three points ahead of her next competitor and a new personal record.”
Navy came out of the gates performing well in the smallbore event as the team posted a score of 2,308. The Mids second-best score of 2017-18 was spearheaded by Kuhne’s 586. Daniel Enger (Fr., Walla Walla, Wash.) placed fourth overall in the field and second on Navy with a 579-point effort. The third score for the Mids came from Torrance Kang (Fr., Columbia, Md.) with a 573, while Thomas Sarant (Sr., Massapequa, N.Y.) and Josh Watson (Jr., Enterprise, Ala.) tied with the fourth-best score at 570.
In the second half of the competition in air rifle, Navy posted a 2,347-point result. Kuhne was the Mids’ top scorer again with Kang coming in second in the team’s lineup at 587. Sarant and Enger rounded out the counters for Navy with respective scores of 586 and 582. As a non-starter, Luke Knollinger (Fr., Valley Grove, W.Va.) recorded a 586 in air rifle.
Navy’s 4,655 aggregate score was the highest for the program since Feb. 26, 2011 when the Mids shot a 4,659 versus Akron.
After one day off, the Mids will close out their busy GARC weekend with a match versus No. 11 North Carolina State on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
