Rifle Comes Up Short Against Ole Miss
Feb. 3, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 15th-ranked Navy rifle team came up just short in its bid to defeat No. 10 Ole Miss on Sunday in Annapolis, falling 4622-4617, at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range. The Rebels bested Navy, 2293-2286, in smallbore, while the Mids topped Ole Miss in air rifle, 2331-2329. Both Navy and Ole Miss are now 3-4 on the season.
"It was a great match. It came down to the last 10 shots and you could tell it was going to come down to that," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "Our team is committed to becoming better and the competition is going to make us better, so we're not discouraged at all."
Junior Steven Frazier led all shooters in smallbore with a score of 582, which was just one point shy of his career high. Ryan Williams followed with a 570, Zach Gibson scored a 568 and Jodi Cull-Host posted a 566. Alivia Yeager and Abbey Stanec both posted a 577 to lead the Rebels.
Senior Ryan Williams was the high scorer in air rifle as he fired a season-best 592. Ole Miss' Rena Goodwin and Cull-Host followed as both scored a 584. Frazier fired a 581 and Zach Gibson a 574 to round out Navy's 2331 in the discipline. Yeager (582), Kim Coffey (582) and Abbey Stanec (581) were the other scorers for Ole Miss.
Navy will be off next weekend and return to action with the NCAA Qualifier on Feb. 16.
"We've got two tough weeks of training ahead of us and we'll be ready to go," said Kelley.
