ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy's air rifle score of 2316 carried the Midshipmen rifle team to a 4578 - 4061 score over John Jay in the NCAA Qualifier at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range on Saturday morning. The victory improved Navy's record to 7-2 overall.
"I was proud of our effort and Allison Paulson had a very good day for us," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We gave it our all and came up short, but you can't fault the effort. We just lacked the depth we needed all year, but we have a lot of good, young shooters and we will be back. I am confident of that. We made a lot of big strides this year."
Navy recorded a 2262 in smallbore to outdistance John Jay's 1904. Steven Frazier garnered smallbore medalist honors with a 576. Allison Paulson and Ryan Williams totaled a 569 and 564, respectively. Freshman Alex Berry rounded out Navy's smallbore with a 553.
The Mids had a strong 2316 in air rifle, fueled by Paulson's 587. Frazier added a 581 and Williams scored a 579. Freshman Britney Thornton fired a 569.
Despite the strong air rifle score, it is doubtful it was enough to get Navy into the NCAA Tournament. This score is coupled with the average of two other scores and will likely not be enough to help Navy advance to its 21st straight NCAA Championship. Navy entered the NCAA Qualifier ranked 15th in the country. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championship.
Navy will compete in the MAC Championship next weekend in Cambridge, Mass., beginning at 8:00 am.
