OXFORD, Miss. - The Navy rifle team completed competition at the Great American Rifle Conference championship meet on Sunday with a 2,321-point showing in the air rifle portion of the two-day event. Shooting at the University of Mississippi, the Mids finished in seventh place overall in the nine-team field with a 4,612 final score.
"We shot fair today, but average just really wasn't going to put us in contention against a power-packed field like we saw at this meet," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "Competing shoulder-to-shoulder against this quality of competition will undoubtebly help us going forward in the future."
Sophomore Zach Gibson (Montrose, Colo.) led the Mids in Sunday's air rifle shoot with a score of 582. The second-year shooter registered two frames of 99 and a third of 98 to lead to his team-high total.
Alex Berry (Jr., Greensboro, N.C.) and Jodi Cull-Host (So., Los Alamos, N.M.) tied for the second-best score on Navy with identical 580-point performances. Dan Jonas (Fr., Allentown, N.J.) was one-point shy of this duo as he completed Sunday's competition with a 579-point score. Senior Steven Frazier (McDonough, Ga.) completed his collegiate career with a score of 572.
