ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy rifle team fired a strong score in air rifle, which propelled it to a 35-point win over Akron in the MAC Championships. The Mids will finish with a 9-4 dual-meet record following the victory.
"I thought we had a good day in air rifle, but we struggled somewhat in smallbore," said Navy coach Bill Kelley. "Overall, it was a good day for us and good to get a win in the MAC Championships. This was a good tune-up for the NCAA Championships and we hope we can put on a good show next weekend."
Josh Albright claimed medalist honors in both disciplines, leading Navy to the win. The Mids shot a 2337 in air rifle, led by Albright's 580. Chris Schneider shot a 576, Sarah Bergman followed with a 565 and Alex Karacsonyi shot a 580.
Navy then fired a 2337 in air rifle, led by Albright's 590. Sophomore Lisa Kunzelman added a 588, Bergman tallied a 581 score and Karacsonyi rounded out Navy's contingent with a 578.
Navy will compete in next weekend's NCAA Championships, which begins Friday in Fairbanks, Alaska. The championships appearance is Navy's 16th straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
