Oct. 1, 2011
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy rifle team opened the 2011-12 season on Saturday by winning day one of the MAC Tournament at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range in Annapolis. The Midshipmen posted a team total of 4595, edging second-place Akron, which produced a team total of 4567.
"We've got a lot of new kids this season and today was a decent score for us," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley of his young team. "We're not rebuilding, we are starting from the beginning. It was a team effort today - everybody pitched in."
Despite a roster loaded with freshmen and sophomores, it was a pair of upperclassmen in junior Ryan Williams and senior Allison Paulson that guided the Mids on Saturday. Williams, a native of McDonald, Ohio, fired a 581 in the smallbore to take first place. In the air rifle, Williams and Paulson tied for the top spot as each fired a 585.
Sophomore Steven Frazier also had a solid outing on Saturday as he posted a pair of personal-best scores. In the smallbore, Frazier scored a 575 to take second place overall. In the air rifle, the native of McDonough, Ga., fired a 574.
"Steven had a nice day today," said Kelley. "That was good to see."
The two-day competition, which produces team and individual champions on both days, will resume on Sunday at 8 a.m. at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
