ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The Navy rifle team opened the 2012-13 season on Saturday at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range with the MAC Tournament. Navy topped the four-team field in both disciplines as it registered a 2328 in air rifle and 2276 in smallbore for a combined total of 4604. Akron finished with a 2253 in smallbore and a 2307 in air rifle as its combined score of 4560 put the Zips in second place. VMI took third with a combined score of 4471 and John Jay placed fourth with a 3826.
"We did okay today. Everyone was anxious to do well and I think we had some first-match jitters," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "The freshmen did remarkably well for their first match. They came very close to what they've been shooting in practice."
Junior Steven Frazier led all competitors in the smallbore with a score of 575, while Ryan Williams' 589 was tops in air rifle. Frazier and Navy freshman Jodi Cull-Host followed Williams in air rifle as both posted scores of 580. Freshmen Shawn Cleary and Zach Gibson rounded out Navy's air rifle scoring, firing a 579 and 575, respectively.
In smallbore Williams posted a 569, while Gibson and sophomore Alex Berry both registered a 566. Cull-Host shot a 563.
"We were off a bit in air rifle today, but we focused significantly on smallbore the past week or so," said Kelley. "Overall, it was a good match."
The MAC Tournament will continue tomorrow in Annapolis as Navy will again take on Akron and VMI.
