ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy rifle team concluded its first weekend of competition with a victory on Day Two of the Navy Invitational. Finishing with a combined total of 4,610 points, the Mids defeated Akron (4,587) and SUNY Maritime (4,261) at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range on Sunday. In smallbore, Navy's five shooters totaled 2,291 points, while scoring 2,319 in air rifle.
Individually, freshman Dan Jonas (Allentown, N.J.) led the Mids with 1,158 combined points. After shooting a 572 in smallbore, Jonas shot a competition-high 586 in air rifle.
After compiling 2,267 points in smallbore on Saturday, the Mids came out on Sunday and improved by 24 points. The four shooters, who participated on both days of competition, either equalled or increased their point totals on Sunday.
Senior Steven Frazier (McDonough, Ga.) was Navy's high scorer in smallbore with 577 points.
Jonas' 572 was tied for second on the team with sophomore Zach Gibson (Montrose, Colo.), who tied a career-best with the result. Gibson was making his first start in smallbore after sitting out that portion of the competition on Saturday.
Jodi Cull-Host (So., Los Alamos, N.M.) and Alex Berry (Jr., Greensboro, N.C.) rounded out Navy's starting
smallbore shooters. The duo finished with totals of 570 and 561, respectively.
Of note in exhibition smallbore shooting, junior Brandon Thompson (Shelbyville, Ky.) tied a career-high with 568 points.
In air rifle action, Jonas' 586 was followed by Cull-Host and Gibson, who each finished with 580 points.
Frazier shot a 573, while Berry shot a 571 to complete the scoring for Navy's starting lineup.
In exhibition air rifle shooting, freshman Brandon Pippin (Nashville, Tenn.) finished with 585 points, a 20-point improvement over his debut on Saturday.
Navy will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 12 with a team competition versus the University of the Sciences. The match will begin at 10 a.m. at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
