ANNAPOLIS, Md. - In the annual President’s Trophy Match on Saturday, the Navy rifle team shot a combined 5,750 to finish in third place behind Army and Air Force. Participating in a unique five-man scoring format, the Mids came up 59 points short of Army’s match winning total of 5,809. Air Force finished with 5,800 points, while Coast Guard netted 5,510 points to round out the field of service academy programs.

“We’re disappointed to finish in third place, but we’re pleased with our overall improvement from last year,” said Navy head rifle coach Bill Kelley. “Improving by 31 points from 2012 shows that we are heading in the right direction. The future of Navy in this event is definitely improving as our plebes and youngsters continue to gain experience versus more seasoned competitors on the Army and Air Force squads.”

Freshman Dan Jonas (Allentown, N.J.) led Navy with a combined total of 1,153 as the plebe shot a 570 in smallbore and a 583 in air rifle.

Senior captain Steven Frazier (McDonough, Ga.) highlighted Navy’s effort in smallbore as he shot a 576 to finish fifth overall in the field. Even with Frazier through the prone and standing sections of action, Alex Berry (Jr., Greensboro, N.C.) came in two points short of her teammate with a final total of 574.

Following Jonas’ 570, Jodi Cull-Host (So., Los Alamos, N.M.) and Zach Gibson (So., Montrose, Colo.) rounded out the Midshipmen’s five scorers in smallbore. As a team, Navy’s top five scorers totaled 2,851 points.

In air rifle action, Gibson paced the Mids with a 584-point total. The sophomore finished tied for ninth overall in the individual standings. Jonas and Cull-Host finished with 583 and 581 points, respectively to give Navy three shooters with totals in the 580’s.
