COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Navy rifle team fired a smallbore total of 2824 and currently stands in third place after day one of the President's Trophy match in Colorado Springs, Colo. Host Air Force led all four teams with a smallbore total of 2880, while Army fired a total of 2871 and Coast Guard a 2596. The top five scorers on each team counted toward the total score. The two-day tournament will wrap up tomorrow as the teams will square off in air rifle.
Navy junior Steven Frazier led all shooters with a season-high smallbore score of 583.
"I think one the strengths I saw in our team today was that our kneeling scores improved," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We are improving over the past couple matches. We're young and inexperienced, but we're learning."
"Shooting on the road is a lot different than shooting at home," said Kelley. "Hopefully we can adjust and be a little stronger tomorrow."
While Saturday's smallbore match was delayed due to technical difficulties, air rifle competition is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
