COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
The Navy rifle team placed third in the annual President's Trophy match that concluded on Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colo., with the air rifle competition. Host Air Force won the event for the first time with a team total of 5806, while Army placed second with a team total of 5790. Navy posted a 5719 and Coast Guard a 5316.
The two-day event wrapped up on Sunday with the air rifle competition after the teams shot smallbore on Saturday. Each team had five scores count toward the team total in both disciplines.
The 11th-ranked Falcons, which were in first place after smallbore on day one, equaled their performance on Sunday as they topped the field with a 2926 in air rifle. No. 8 Army's 2919 was second best, while No. 12 Navy shot a 2895 and Coast Guard a 2721 in the discipline.
"We weren't at our best today - we're going to have to get better," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley.
Senior captain Ryan Williams led all Navy scorers in air rifle on Sunday with a 585. Junior Steven Frazier, who posted a match-high 583 in smallbore on Saturday, shot a 584 in air rifle on Sunday.
"Steven had a good day and Ryan was able to recover from a slow start," said Kelley.
A trio of freshmen in Zach Gibson (579), Shawn Cleary (576) and Jodi Cull-Host (571) completed Navy's scoring five.
The Midshipmen will compete in their third consecutive road match next Saturday when they travel to Kentucky.
