WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Navy rifle team shot one of its higher scores of the season, but it wasn't enough to overcome strong efforts by Army and Air Force and the Midshipmen finished third in the President's Trophy on Saturday afternoon.
Army won the event among the four service academies with a five-person score of 5812. Air Force was second at 5749. Navy came in third with a 5734 and Coast Guard rounded out the scoring with a 5387. In the NCAA four-man scoring format, Army posted its second score of the season with a 4651 followed by the Midshipmen (4607), Falcons (4599) and Bears (4333).
"There is not too much to say. We shot an OK score, but Army shot very well," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We have a lot of work to do and just aren't gettingathe consistent scores we need."
Navy totaled a 2894 (2321) in air rifle, while tallying a 2842 (2286 NCAA) score in the smallbore discipline. Allison Paulson and Ryan Williams scored a 584 in air rifle to finish eighth and ninth, respectively. Steven Frazier added a 580, Carol Boyd and Robyn Draughon each fired a 573.
In smallbore, Williams and Paulson tied for seventh with a 572, Frazier and Boyd scored a 571 and Britney Thornton tallied a 556.
Navy will close out its fall season next Friday when it hosts John Jay at 1:00 pm at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
