Rifle Falls on the Road at No. 1 Kentucky in GARC Match
Nov. 9, 2013
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Navy rifle team fell to the top-ranked University of Kentucky Wildcats on the road on Saturday by a 4,693-4,593 final score. A poor conclusion to the smallbore competition put the Mids in a deficit that they would not be able to overcome during the remainder of the match.
"I'm very disappointed with today's result," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "This was not a good performance for our squad. We had a good start in kneeling, but it quickly went downhill after that and we never recovered."
Alex Berry (Jr., Greensboro, N.C.) had Navy's leading performance on Saturday as she shot a career-high 575 in smallbore. Her previous best was 574 last week in the President's Trophy Match.
"Alex had a great day with a career-best in smallbore," said Kelley. "She continues to emerge as one of our best smallbore shooters."
Zach Gibson (So., Montrose, Colo.) and Dan Jonas (Fr., Allentown, N.J.) gave the Mids two more shooters in the 570s as Gibson registered a 571 and Jonas a 570.
Steven Frazier (Sr., McDonaugh, Ga.) and Jodi Cull-Host (So., Los Alamos, N.M.) rounded out Navy's starting shooters with scores of 564 and 561, respectively
In exhibition smallbore shooting, sophomore Shawn Cleary (Sugar Land, Texas) shot a career-best 565.
As part of his team-best 1,152 aggregate score, Jonas led the Mids with a 582-point performance in air rifle.
Cull-Host and Frazier finished second and third on Navy in air rifle with totals of 580 and 577, respectively.
Brandon Pippin (Fr., Nashville, Tenn.) and Gibson were the final two starting shooters. The duo posted respective scores of 574 and 573.
As a team, the Mids shot a 2,280 in smallbore and 2,313 in air rifle. In comparision, the Wildcats shot a 2,328 in smallbore and 2,365 in air rifle.
Navy will conclude the 2013 portion of its schedule next Saturday with a three-team meet versus GARC foes West Virginia and North Carolina State on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
