ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The Navy rifle team closed out its fall season and improved to 4-0 in dual meets on Friday by defeating John Jay College, 4618-4252, at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
Navy won the smallbore discipline, 2281-2083, and won by an even wider margin in the air rifle competition, 2337-2169.
The Mids' overall score of 4618 was a season high.
"We got off to a good start in smallbore and were much improved in air rifle tonight," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We weren't as good as we can be. But, overall, it was a really solid performance."
Navy's Steven Frazier fired a 575 in smallbore to lead all competitors and had a career-best score of 579 in the air rifle.
"It was good to have Steven lead us tonight," said Kelley. "That was great to see."
Ryan Williams and Allison Paulson both notched a 569 in smallbore, while Carol Boyd turned in a 568 and Britney Thornton a 560 to round out the scoring five in the first competition of the day.
In the air rifle discipline, Williams fired just above his season average of 585.2 as he posted a 588 to lead all competitors. Boyd finished just one point back with a 587, while Paulson's 583 was third best.
"I thought Boyd, Paulson and Williams all had some very nice numbers in air gun," said Kelley.
"Overall, I'm pretty pleased with today. Not a bad day - especially for our youngsters."
Navy will be back in action in 2012 when it competes in the Maryland/Virginia Junior Olympic Qualifier on Jan. 7.
