Rifle's Kestrel Kuhne Named NAAA Athlete of the Week
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After a weekend of top-notch results, Kestrel Kuhne was selected as the Naval Academy Athletic Association Athlete of the Week. The sophomore member of the Navy rifle team shot a career-high on Friday versus Nebraska with an aggregate score of 1,178 before coming back on Sunday and leading the Mids to a school-record team score of 4,683 against North Carolina State.
In Friday's match against the Huskers, Kuhne (Everett, Pa.) was the top individual scorer for the entire competition with a career-best 1,178-point aggregate that surpassed Nebraska's Hannah Virga's 1,175 for top billing. Kuhne's career day came courtesy of a pair of personal-bests with a 586 in smallbore and 592 in air rifle. The sophomore's previous high scores were a 577 in smallbore and 591 in air rifle.
Two days later versus another Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) opponent in the Wolfpack, Kuhne and her teammates had a match for the history books as the Mids set school records in aggregate (4,683) and air rifle scoring (2,360). Individually, Kuhne shot a team-high 1,176 aggregate on Sunday.
Navy will be back in action this weekend with two more GARC matches. First up is a Friday afternoon contest at West Virginia at 9 a.m. before the team returns home for a 9 a.m. match with Ole Miss at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
