Kang and Kuhne Selected to Participate in 2018 NCAA Rifle Championship
INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA announced late Wednesday the field for the upcoming 2018 NCAA Rifle Championships. After releasing the names of the eight programs that qualified as teams, eight top-scoring individuals were announced. For their efforts in the NCAA Qualifying Match this past Saturday, sophomore Kestrel Kuhne (Everett, Pa.) and freshman Torrance Kang (Columbia, Md.) were selected to the prestigious national championship event. The two Midshipmen sharpshooters will compete on the weekend of March 9-10 in Charleston, S.C. with Kuhne shooting in the smallbore event and Kang in the air rifle contest.
Kuhne will be one of 48 athletes, who will be shooting in the smallbore three-position competition on Saturday, March 9. The Mids’ top scorer during the regular season with a 577.9 average over 12 matches, the sophomore saved her best for last as she recorded a career-high 587 this past Saturday, Feb. 17 in Navy’s NCAA Qualifying Match versus John Jay. Since the calendar flipped to 2018, she’s surpassed the 580 mark in six of seven matches.
Kang earned her spot in the air rifle portion of the match after posting a 593 against John Jay on Saturday. The Mids’ leading air rifle scorer for the majority of the year, Kang had a 589.4 average with seven match results of 590 or better and 10 of 12 at 587 or more. Her season-high was a 594 versus North Carolina State on Jan. 21. The NCAA air rifle competition will go off on Sunday, March 10.
