ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The No. 16-ranked Navy rifle team will close out its 2011-12 season this weekend when it travels to Cambridge, Mass., for the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) Championships. The Mids will face off against Akron, who will be competing in East Lansing, Mich., on Saturday.
Navy has won the last 12 MAC Championships, but is ranked one spot behind Akron in the national rankings and the Zips defeated the Midshipmen by two points, 4610 to 4608, in the season-opening MAC Open.
Navy enters the match with a 7-2 overall record, but failed to qualify for the NCAA Championships, announced earlier this week, for the first time since the 1990-91 season. It snapped a span of 20 consecutive NCAA Championship appearances.
Navy is coming off a 4578 to 4061 victory over John Jay in last weekend's NCAA Qualifier. The Mids totaled a 2262 in smallbore and a 2316 in air rifle to run away with the match. Navy has shot a 4618 earlier this year and has highs of 2292 in smallbore and 2337 in air rifle.
Leading the way for Navy in the smallbore discipline is Steven Frazier with a 573.6 average. Ryan Williams follows with a 569.6 and Allison Paulson contributes a 568.5. Navy's depth has been an issue all season long as Alex Berry, Brandon Thompson and Britney Thornton have battled it our for the fourth counting spot all season long. Berry averages a 552.5, Thompson a 551.4 and Thornton a 540.5.
Williams leads Navy in air rifle with a 583.3 average, sitting just outside Navy's top-five single-season air rifle averages in school history. Paulson has had a strong season with a 579.4 average and Frazier follows with a 578.8. Thornton (563.6), Thompson (559.9) and Berry (566.5) also compete for the fourth counting spot in air rifle as well.
The event will be the final competition of the 2011-12 season for the Navy rifle team.
