Kang and Kuhne to Represent Navy at NCAA Rifle Championships
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The duo of Torrance Kang (Fr., Columbia, Md.) and Kestrel Kuhne (So., Everett, Pa.) will be in action this Friday and Saturday on the grandest stage of collegiate rifle competition, the 2018 NCAA National Championships. Earning their way into the event as individual qualifiers, Kuhne will participate in the smallbore contest on Friday beginning at 9:45 a.m. before Kang steps to the line on Saturday morning at 9:45 a.m. for the air rifle shoot. The Citadel and McAlister Field House in Charleston, S.C. will serve as the host site for the national championship
Kang is the Navy’s leading scorer in air rifle with an average of 589.5 over 13 matches this season. She qualified to compete in the air rifle championship as an individual entrant as a result of a 593 score on Feb. 17 versus John Jay. That 593 result was Kang’s second-best air rifle score in her collegiate career. Through 13 matches in the 2017-18 season, Kuhne leads the Mids with a 577.5 scoring average in smallbore. In the team’s NCAA Qualifying Match, she posted a career-high 587.
The championship will feature the top eight teams in the nation: five-time defending national champion No. 1 West Virginia, No. 2 TCU, No. 3 Murray State, No. 4 Kentucky, No. 5 Alaska Fairbanks, No. 6 Air Force, No. 7 Ohio State and No. 8 Nebraska. Kang and Kuhne are two of eight individual qualifiers, who posted a high enough score in last month’s NCAA Qualifying Match, to shoot shoulder-to-shoulder with participants from the above eight competing schools. Other individuals come from N.C. State, Memphis and UT Martin in the smallbore and Ole Miss, Memphis and Army in the air rifle.
The smallbore portion of the championship will be held Friday, March 9 from 9:45 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Relay No. 1 will be called to the range at 9:45 a.m. with competition lasting from 10:15 a.m. until 12 p.m. Relay No. 2 will then be called to the range at 12:15 p.m. with competition going from 12:45 until 2:30 p.m.
Air rifle will be contested Saturday, March 10 from 9:45 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. The first air rifle relay will be called to the range at 9:45 a.m. with competition beginning at 10:15 a.m. and lasting until 11:30 a.m. Relay No. 2 will be called to the range at 11:45 a.m. with competition lasting from 12:15 until 1:30 p.m.
