Navy Rifle's Marta Jung Takes Top Five at World Military Shooting Championship
Links associated with this release: LAHTI, Finland - Marta Jung (So./Reno, Nev.), a member of the United States Women's Rifle Team, recorded a fifth-place finish in the Ladies' Sport Rifle competition at the 2001 World Military Shooting Championship Monday morning at the Finnish Regimental Range in Lahti, Finland. "Today, I shot a lot better than I did yesterday in the qualifying team competition," Jung said. "I still feel like I could have shot better. It was very damp today, but considerably less windy than yesterday." Jung, who shot a perfect 100 in her first round, was the highest-finishing American and her score of 591 was just two points shy of Germany's Sonja Pfeilschifter first-place total of 593. Pfeilschifter, the 2000 world champion, posted perfect rounds of 100 in the second and sixth rounds. Finishing in seventh with a score of 591 was reigning Russian National Champion Irina Guerassimenok, also a member of the 2000 Russian Olympic team. In the qualifying round Sunday, Jung posted a score of 585 to tie for 16th overall out of 60 participants. Most of the shooters are current members of their national teams, including many past Olympians. "Just to make the World Military Shooting Championship team is a huge accomplishment," Navy head rifle coach Bill Kelley said. "Any time a person can go from practice and translate those scores to competition is significant. She is on a roll right now and is shooting with the world's best. She likes the competition and wants to be shooting with the best. "This brings recognition to the Navy program that is has been deserving for a long time. She has only been here a year and is now on the world stage. I really think it will be a big boost for Navy rifle." Jung will be off Tuesday before returning to the range Wednesday in the Ladies' Sport Rifle 3 x 20 team competition and will be looking to qualify for the individual finals Thursday.
