Rifle Set for Early Season Match with Coast Guard Academy
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After opening its 2017-18 campaign with a GARC conference win at Memphis on Sept. 24, the Navy rifle team will host the Coast Guard Academy in its season home opener on Saturday. Shooting at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range, the Mids (1-0, 1-0 GARC) and Bears (0-0) will begin competition at 9:00 a.m. The matchup is the first of two this season, in which the programs will shoot at the range. On Saturday, Nov. 4, Navy and USCGA will be two of the four service academy teams competing in the 2017 President's Trophy Match.
Last Time Out
The Navy rifle team began its 2017-18 season on Sunday, Sept. 24 in impressive fashion as the nation's 14th-ranked team went on the road and knocked off No. 11 Memphis in a Great American Rifle Conference match by 39 points at 4634 to 4595. In the first competition for the Mids under first-year head coach Mike Anti, the team posted a 2,297-point output in smallbore and a 2,337-point result in air rifle. Junior Josh Watson highlighted Navy's performance with a career-high 1,167-point aggregate score.
In terms of aggregate scoring, Watson's 1167 was 10 points better than the second-place finisher Levi Clark of Memphis. Watson's previous career-high was 1163. The matches' third, fourth, fifth and sixth-highest scorers all came from Navy in the form of Kestrel Kuhne (1155), Thomas Sarant (1154), Luke Knollinger (1154) and Torrance Kang (1153).

Following Saturday's matchup with the Coast Guard Academy, Navy will jump back into Great American Rifle Conference action with a road trip to Lexington, Ky. for a head-to-head bout with the University of Kentucky on Sunday, Oct. 15.
